Professional Competencies
I will use ACPA/NASPA's Professional Competencies rubrics to outline the specific areas I have worked or engaged in professional development to acquire associated skills as well as my perspective of each
Advising & Support
I have acted as unofficial advisor to any student who needed it. Most recently I helped acclimate an international student from India who needed extra help understanding our culture and the school system. I also took her some places she needed to go and had lunch with her, to make her feel welcome. This is where I want to use my 'helper' skills and I shine in this category. This is why I chose Higher Education!
Organizational & Human Resources
I have resolved many conflicts in my supervisory positions. I also like to network with other departments so that we can help each other. I am familiar with hiring and staffing practices, including performance evaluation and proper procedure for addressing problems.
Law, Policy & Governance
I completed a "Parameters of Law" course as part of my Graduate Program, which helped me understand the ethical and inclusive application of policy, along with the importance of civic engagement.
Personal & Ethical Foundations
I believe in wellness and healthy living and try to set an example for my peers by my food choices and inviting them to forms of exercise outside of work. I have my personal code of ethics that I carry over to work, which include morals about working when you say you will work and doing your best at any job given to you. I believe in being a team player and never saying "That is not my job".
Leadership
I have held leadership positions for many portions of my career, from supervising fast food employees to supervising and scheduling 16 student workers at one time. I believe I was fair and gave everyone a chance to redeem themselves if needed. I was the type of leader who wanted to get my hands dirty as well, so I could better see what needed to be done. I am also a team player. I want to know everyone's jobs around me so I can help in case they are absent.
Social Justice & Inclusion
I understand my own identity and how I intersect with other cultures. I am sensitive to other cultures and have a genuine interest in learning about them and participating when I can. I try to always be inclusive of everyone, no matter their culture and to recognize when they are being treated unfairly.
Student Learning & Development
I understand several student development theories, including Scholossberg’s Transition Theory, Chickering’s Theory of Identity Development - The Seven Vectors, and Josselson’s Theory of Identity Development in Women. I seek every opportunity to increase my competency in this area, including good assessment and evaluation methods. I am currently building an assessment cycle for APA Accreditation purposes.
Assessment, Evaluation & Research
I assessed current students, alumni, and faculty using surveys to collect information in order to get the PsyD Program at Western Kentucky University APA Accredited.
Technology
I have a broad understanding of tools and a solid background in technology, since my undergrad degree was technology heavy. I use Qualtrics, Microsoft Office, build databases and spreadsheets to organize data, and am able to learn new technologies quickly. I am familiar with data use and compliance, including the IRB process.

Values/Philosophy & History
I understand the historical foundations of the student affairs profession and how theoretical foundations has helped the profession move forward. The contributions made by Student Affairs to society and to higher education are many and far reaching and the profession brings value, not only to students, but also to society in general. I believe we have a responsibility to the public to treat students fairly and to help mold socially responsible graduates.
